AI in Podcasting

AI has transformed podcasting – from editing and transcripts to content creation. But here’s the real question: is it helping us tell better stories or quietly making us sound the same?

In this issue, I explore how AI is reshaping the podcasting world and what it really means for creators. You’ll learn how to harness tools like ChatGPT, Castmagic, and Riverside without losing your humanity or creativity in the process

If you’ve ever wondered whether AI is a friend or a foe to your podcast, this one’s for you.

When Alex Sanfilippo, founder of PodMatch, recently wrote “How to Avoid Losing Your (Podcasting) Voice in the Age of AI,” one line caught my attention:

“AI has flooded the world of podcasting, making it more competitive and crowded than ever before. Thankfully, there’s a way to                            stand out – by simply being yourself.”

He’s right.

But I’d like to take that thought one step further.

Because while AI might be reshaping how we produce, promote, and even plan our podcasts, it’s also raising a deeper question:

Is AI helping us – or quietly taking over the creative process that made podcasting human in the first place?

The Rise of AI Behind the Mic

Let’s be honest – podcasters have been using AI long before ChatGPT or Claude entered the chat.

Think about platforms like Riverside (with automatic transcript generation and background noise removal), Descript (which edits audio using text), or Castmagic (which turns your recordings into show notes, summaries, and posts).

Each of these tools promised what every podcaster dreams of:

  • less time editing,
  • fewer late nights, and
  • more time connecting with your audience.

And for the most part, they’ve delivered.

Yet, somewhere along the way, the convenience started creeping into every corner of our process – from brainstorming topics to writing scripts to crafting emails and social posts.

AI became our co-host, our editor, our scheduler, even our content strategist.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:
The more we automate, the more we risk sounding like everyone else.

The Productivity Trap

The Productivity Trap

AI is brilliant at making things faster.
But faster doesn’t always mean better.

When every podcaster has access to the same tools, prompts, and templates, the result can start to feel… well, robotic.

Your workflow might be smoother, but your brand voice can get lost in the noise.

I’ve spoken with hosts who say:

“I’m saving hours every week using AI!”

And yet, when I listen to their shows, the spark that once made them memorable feels muted.

What’s missing?
Their voice. Their quirks. Their lived experience.

AI can process information – but it can’t process emotion.

And that’s the heartbeat of podcasting.

AI as a Mirror, not a Replacement

So where does that leave us?

Here’s how I like to frame it:

AI should be your mirror, not your mask.

Use it to reflect your ideas – not to replace them.

For example:

  • Use ChatGPT or Claude to outline your next episode, but write your own stories and examples.
  • Use Castmagic to extract quotes and timestamps but rewrite the captions in your own voice.
  • Use Riverside to clean your audio, but don’t rely on AI-generated voices to replace your real tone.

AI can amplify your creativity but only if you remain the creative director.

When you give AI too much control, it doesn’t just change your workflow, it changes your identity as a creator.

Let’s talk about time, the promise AI keeps dangling in front of us.

AI says, “I’ll save you hours!”

But how often does that saved time translate into rest, reflection, or strategy?

Too often, it becomes:

“Great! Now I can make even more content!”

And suddenly, we’re not simplifying – we’re scaling our overwhelm.

We fall into the productivity trap again, only now it’s powered by algorithms instead of adrenaline.

True ease comes from alignment, not automation.
It’s not about doing more with less effort – it’s about doing less, better.

The Hidden Cost of Ease

Where AI Truly Shines

Now, I don’t want to sound anti-AI, far from it.

There are areas where AI truly elevates podcasting:

Accessibility: Automated transcripts and summaries make episodes more inclusive.

Analytics: Smart insights help us understand what resonates with our audience.

Content Repurposing: Tools like Castmagic or Podium help transform one episode into a dozen pieces of content.

Sound Engineering: Platforms like Auphonic or Adobe Podcast enhance production quality with a click.

These innovations remove barriers that once required expensive equipment or teams.
They give indie podcasters – like me, like you – a fighting chance in a noisy industry.

But the key is how we use them.

Are they supporting our authenticity or suffocating it?

Reclaiming the Human Element

Reclaiming the Human Element

The magic of podcasting isn’t in the polish it’s in the presence.

Your laugh.
Your pauses.
Your “ums” and “ahs.”
Your stories that don’t fit neatly into an algorithm’s idea of “engagement.”

That’s what your listeners connect with.

They’re not tuning in for perfection they’re tuning in for you.

If AI can help you show up with more consistency, clarity, and confidence – fantastic.
But if it starts replacing your stories, your opinions, or your creative flow – it’s time to pause.

Because your podcast doesn’t need to sound like a machine to succeed.
It needs to sound like a human who cares.

Three Ways to Keep Your Humanity in an AI-Driven World

Use AI as your assistant, not your author.

Let AI do the heavy lifting – transcripts, outlines, admin tasks. But when it comes to your core message, write it yourself. That’s where your credibility and emotional resonance live.

Infuse your content with lived experience.

AI can’t replicate what you’ve lived through – your challenges, your insights, your growth. That’s your advantage. Tell stories that only you can tell.

Edit for emotion, not just efficiency.

Don’t just ask, “Does this sound good?” Ask, “Does this feel like me?” If the answer’s no, go back and add the warmth, humour, or honesty that makes your voice real.

The Future of AI and Podcasting

AI isn’t going anywhere, and truthfully, it shouldn’t.
It’s helping more people share their voice than ever before.
But we can’t forget why we started podcasting in the first place:
to connect, to teach, to share, to serve.

If AI helps you do that – it’s a friend.
If it distracts you from it – it becomes a foe.

The balance lies in intentionality.

AI can’t create your magic, it can only enhance it.

The question isn’t “Should I use AI?” but rather “How can I use it without losing myself?”

Because in the end, your voice – not your tools – is what builds trust, loyalty, and legacy.

Conclusion

As Alex Sanfilippo said, “The best way to stand out in the world of AI is by embracing your humanity.”

I couldn’t agree more.

So here’s my invitation to you:
Next time you’re tempted to let AI do all the work, pause for a moment.

Ask yourself,

“Am I creating, or just generating?”

One will connect you to your audience.
The other will connect you to the algorithm.

→ Choose connection.
→ Choose authenticity.
→ Choose your voice.

Because in a world full of artificial intelligence, real voices still matter most.
