Relationship coach Natalie Vartanian explores high-functioning co-dependency, inherited roles, identity loss, and reclaiming yourself within marriage.
KEY POINTS
- How inherited gender roles and high-functioning codependency can cause capable, independent women to lose their identity within marriage.
- Why self-reflection, trusted friendships, therapy, and vulnerable communication can help women recognise and interrupt automatic caretaking patterns.
- How shared accountability, emotional honesty, personal agency, and a strong foundation of friendship can create a healthier and more balanced marriage.
About this Episode
Have you ever realised that the independent woman you once were has disappeared inside your marriage? Before marrying, Natalie Vartanian had spent years building confidence and independence. Yet marriage activated inherited ideas about what a “good wife” should be. Without consciously choosing it, she began accommodating everyone, completing tasks, placing her needs last, and measuring her value by how much she could carry.
In this episode of Not Just a Story, Natalie joins Rose Davidson to examine how cultural conditioning, family patterns, oldest-daughter responsibility, and high-functioning co-dependency can reshape a woman’s identity. What appears as competence and devotion may conceal resentment, exhaustion, loneliness, and disconnection. Natalie explains why changing the pattern felt dangerous, as though advocating for herself might threaten the marriage or make her less worthy of love.
Her return to herself began with honest internal questions: Am I vibrant? Is this working for me? Do I recognise who I have become? Trusted women confirmed she no longer seemed like herself. Internal Family Systems therapy helped her understand the protective and wounded parts driving her behaviour. Vulnerable conversations allowed her husband, Glen, to hear that she was not rejecting him or their marriage. She wanted them to create a healthier way of living together.
Natalie and Rose also explore shared accountability, emotional communication, rebuilding personal agency, and the importance of friendship within marriage. Natalie acknowledges that by doing everything, she had unintentionally trained her husband to depend on her. Reclaiming herself therefore required more than asking him to change. It required interrupting her automatic caretaking.
This conversation offers validation and insight for women who feel invisible, over-responsible, or disconnected within partnership. It is an invitation to remember that love does not need to be earned through exhaustion, and that becoming fully yourself may strengthen, rather than destroy, a relationship.

More About Natalie
Natalie Vartanian, CPCC, PCC, is a certified relationship and intimacy coach who helps women reconnect with passion, pleasure, confidence, and ease after years of putting themselves last. With more than 4,000 coaching hours and a decade of workshop facilitation, she brings extensive professional experience to conversations about identity, love, co-dependency, vulnerability, and intentional relationships. Natalie also understands this work personally. Her experience of losing herself within the expectations of being a “good wife,” then deliberately reclaiming her voice and independence, became a foundation for the work she now shares with women and couples. In 2022, Natalie married Glen Nielsen, her friend of eight years, and together they support couples through Wake Up or Break Up at their retreat centre, The Aerie. Her coaching invites clients to separate their authentic desires from inherited cultural and family expectations. Natalie’s forthcoming first book, Taboo to Turn On, is scheduled for release in 2027.
