Neal Tricarico

After his son Anthony died by suicide, Neal Tricarico challenges the idea of closure and shares how grief, purpose, love and joy can coexist.

KEY POINTS

  • Healing does not have to mean closure. Neal challenges the expectation that grief must eventually be finished or left behind.
  • Grief and joy can coexist. Continuing to live, experience joy, or discover purpose does not mean forgetting the person who died.
  • Loss can be carried differently. Neal shares how his relationship with Anthony continues to shape his life, purpose, and understanding of posttraumatic growth.

About this Episode

What if healing does not require you to close the door on the person you lost?

When Neal Tricarico’s son Anthony died by suicide, Neal was confronted not only by overwhelming grief, but by an expectation he could not make sense of: that eventually he should find closure, move on, or somehow get over what had happened.

He calls that idea The Closure Lie.

In this personal episode of Not Just A Story™, Neal speaks with Rose Davidson about what happened when he stopped trying to imagine grief as something with an endpoint. Instead, he began learning how to carry Anthony with him while continuing to live, love, grow, and find purpose.

Neal shares the lived experience behind The Endurant Way, the framework for posttraumatic growth that grew from his loss. He reflects on the pivotal nine weeks that shaped his understanding of grief, the spiritual connection he feels with Anthony, and why healing does not have to mean leaving someone behind.

This is not a clinical conversation about grief, and Neal does not present himself as a clinician. He speaks as a father, storyteller, and guide who has lived through a devastating loss and found his own way of making meaning from it.

Their conversation makes room for contradictions grief carries. You can miss someone deeply and still experience joy. You can carry pain and still discover purpose. You can continue living without treating that life as evidence that you have moved on.

Neal’s story challenges the idea that grief needs a neat conclusion. Instead, it offers a gentler possibility: perhaps healing is not about closing a chapter, but learning how love, memory, sorrow, and life can continue to exist together.

It is a conversation about enduring love and finding a way forward without pretending the past has disappeared.

What might change if you stopped believing that healing required you to leave someone, or something you have lost, behind?

Your story doesn’t need a neat ending to have meaning. Sometimes sharing what you have learned to carry can help someone else feel less alone.

More About Neal

Neal Tricarico is a speaker, storyteller, guide, and cofounder of the Endurant Movement with his wife, Samara. His work grew from the most devastating experience of his life: the death of his son Anthony by suicide. In the aftermath, Neal began questioning the idea that grief should end in closure or that healing means leaving someone behind. From his lived experience, he created The Endurant Way, a framework for posttraumatic growth centred on learning to carry loss with purpose while continuing to live fully. Neal is not a clinician and does not approach grief from theory. He speaks from what he has lived, including the ongoing spiritual connection he feels with Anthony. Through his work, Neal explores how pain and purpose, grief and joy, can exist alongside one another without cancelling each other out. He is currently writing a book about The Endurant Way and the lessons that shaped it.
