About this Episode

What happens when life places a cancer diagnosis in the path of the future you have just begun to build?

For Zulma Beatriz Williams, the answer was not surrender. Born in Buenos Aires, Zulma immigrated to the United States at 31 after the sudden death of a cousin reminded her that waiting could carry its own cost. At 42, while working in accounting, she began studying social work in English, her second language. Six weeks after completing her bachelor’s degree, she discovered a breast lump and was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The diagnosis changed Zulma’s life, but it did not take ownership of it. She moved from asking “Why me?” to “Why not me?” and made a decision to face treatment without allowing cancer to define her identity. Her words, “I had cancer. Cancer didn’t have me,” became more than a statement about illness. They became a philosophy for meeting every challenge with courage, responsibility and choice.

In this episode of Not Just A Story™ with Rose Davidson, Zulma shares how breast cancer resilience, migration, education and personal reinvention shaped her path. She returned to study, completed her master’s degree at 50, founded Dragonfly Therapy Services and built a career as a bilingual psychotherapist supporting people experiencing trauma, anxiety and depression. At 60, she moved to Panama to fulfil her dream of living beside the ocean.

This conversation offers encouragement for anyone starting over later in life, rebuilding after illness or wondering whether age, fear or past circumstances have closed the door on their dreams. Zulma’s story shows that life transitions can become turning points, that support matters when facing a medical diagnosis and that meaningful change begins from within.

It is never too late to pursue a calling, choose a different direction or step more fully into your potential.
