Kirana Sidin

Kirana Sidin shares how being called “jobless” by her son sparked a journey back to identity, purpose and rediscovering herself beyond motherhood.

KEY POINTS

  • You can lose sight of yourself without realising it. A life filled with love, family and responsibility can still leave little room for your own identity and dreams.
  • Rediscovering yourself does not require a dramatic reinvention. Kirana’s return began quietly, through small pockets of time she chose to make her own.
  • Making space for yourself is not the same as abandoning others. Purpose, creativity and personal growth can exist alongside motherhood, relationships and the people you love.

About this Episode

Can a single, almost throwaway comment change the way you see your life?

For Kirana Sidin, it did.

From the outside, her life looked full: a marriage spanning two decades, five children, a busy home and the constant rhythm of family life in Jakarta, Indonesia. Then one day, her youngest son casually called her “jobless.”

He was not trying to hurt her. But the words reached a part of Kirana that had been quiet for a long time.

They made her ask: who was I before all of this?

In this episode of Not Just A Story™ with Rose Davidson, Kirana shares what happened after that moment. There was no dramatic exit, sudden reinvention or rejection of the family she loved. Instead, she began returning to herself slowly, privately and deliberately.

One hour at a time, often after the house was empty or quiet, Kirana created space to think, write and reconnect with her own identity. She began to notice the difference between a life that was constantly busy and a life that also contained something that belonged to her.

The conversation explores the guilt women can carry when they make space for themselves, even after years of giving to others. Kirana reflects on identity beyond motherhood, the pressure to be available, the quiet loss of self that can happen over time and the courage it can take to reclaim personal purpose.

That gradual return eventually became part of a new chapter. Kirana became a published author, certified life coach and speaker, not by trying to become someone entirely new, but by reconnecting with the person she had set aside.

This is a conversation about rediscovering yourself without abandoning the people you love.

Sometimes coming home to yourself begins with one ordinary moment that refuses to leave you.

Listen to the Episode

When you look beyond the roles you hold for other people, what part of yourself might be asking for space again?

Your story does not need a dramatic turning point to matter. Sometimes the quiet moments reveal the most, and when you are ready, your story may be worth exploring and sharing too.

More About Kirana

Kirana Sidin is an author, certified life coach, speaker and mother of five based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her work explores a question that has quietly shaped much of her life: what does it really mean to build a good life? Drawing from philosophy, psychology and everyday experience, Kirana translates timeless ideas into practical reflections on identity, purpose, relationships and intentional living. Her book, Cheers for a Good Life, reflects her belief that a meaningful life is not something we simply find, but something we build through ordinary choices. Behind her professional work is a deeply personal story of rediscovering herself after years of giving her time and energy to family. Rather than pursuing a dramatic reinvention, Kirana began creating space to remember who she was beyond the roles she carried. Today, through writing, coaching and speaking, she encourages others to build lives that feel genuinely their own with greater intention.
